03/10/2010 Miami International Film Festival: Career Achievement Tribute: Margarethe von Trotta Miami International Film Festival: Career Achievement Tribute: Margarethe von Trotta

Considered a pioneer and an icon of international feminist cinema since the 1970s, acclaimed German actress and director Margarethe von Trotta ranks among the world’s most important filmmakers.

A central theme of her films is the complex relationships that can exist between women. By paying close attention to how women interrelate, she brings into question the social and political systems which either sustain these connections or do not allow them to exist at all.

Many of her films have been nominated and have won prestigious awards and recognition at film festivals and from cinematic organizations worldwide, including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Montreal, the Bavarian Film Awards, the German Film Awards, the German Critics Association Awards, the David di Donatello Awards, and the Guild of German Art House Cinemas Awards.

The Career Achievement to Margarethe von Trotta is followed by a special screening of her newest film, Vision.

Acclaimed filmmaker Nicole Holofcener returns with this insightful comedy about a married couple (Miami native Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt) who make a living acquiring estate furniture cheaply and reselling it expensively in their trendy Manhattan shop. Wanting to expand their two-bedroom apartment, they long to purchase the unit next door. However, before doing so, they must wait for the occupant, a cantankerous elderly woman, to die. Things become complicated when the couple develops relationships with the woman and her two grown granddaughters.

Stemming from her uncanny ability to understand people and their motivations, interactions and contradictions, Holofcener infuses her personal take on love, death, infidelity, conscience, family and liberal guilt in the 21st century with a rare balance of humor and complexity that offers a funny and philosophical reflection on the give and take of modern life. As they say, "truth is stranger than family," and Raymond De Felitta's newest comedy presents a family desperately trying to conform to neighborhood norms by hiding their true characters from each other and the world. Meet the Rizzos, a dysfunctional brood of consummate liars, who might get along better if they could just tell each other the truth.

Dad Vince (Andy Garcia) is having a midlife crisis, mom Joyce (Julianna Margulies) feels neglected, and teens Vivian (Dominik García-Lorido) and Vinnie Jr. (Ezra Miller) are each hiding their own skeletons in the closet. In the end, all secrets are revealed with both comic and very satisfying results. This Audience Award winner at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival with a stellar ensemble cast is a funny and touching tale about past secrets compromising present lies, which confirms that nobody's perfect – least of all your loved ones. 03/13/2010 Miami International Film Festival: "The Secret In Their Eyes" Miami International Film Festival: "The Secret In Their Eyes"

Argentina's official entry and one of the five finalists for this year's foreign-language Oscar tells of a recently retired prosecutor who revisits the unsolved rape and murder of a Buenos Aires woman from 30 years earlier, only to discover that the dark crime and its even darker consequences have become deeply intertwined with his own life.

Helmed by director Juan José Campanella and showcasing two of Argentina's biggest modern stars, Ricardo Darín (Nine Queens, XXY, Kamchatka) and Soledad Villamil (Red Bear, Same Love Same Rain) in the lead roles, this riveting new thriller spiked with witty dialogue and poignant love stories is a film intensely focused on the search for justice and the centrality of memory. Winning rave reviews at the 2009 San Sebastian Film Festival, The Secret in Their Eyes has also been nominated for nine of Spain's prestigious 2010 Goya awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor.
